The Forgotten Garden

5 cookies
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.  The best book I have read in awhile!  LOVED IT.  It's about a tiny girl abandoned on a ship sailing from England to Australia.  She is taken in by the dockmaster and his wife and raised as their own.  When she is told the truth on her 21st birthday it shatters her sense of self, and she sets out to find out who she really is.  This book was sad at times, but beautiful.  I'll say it again - I LOVED IT.

So Cold the River

4 cookies
So Cold the River by Michael Koryta.  I liked this book - it is compared to Stephen King, kind of a supernatural novel.  I've never read any Stephen King books, but I loved the mystery of the book, how you could sense the "bad thing" moving closer and closer to the character.

A Quiet Belief in Angels

4 cookies
A Quiet Belief in Angels by R J Ellory.  This book made me think about it for days after I finished.  It's about a young man who has tragedy after tragedy happen to him and around him - but how he tries to work through it by writing.

Dragon Keeper

4 cookies
Dragon Keeper by Carole Wilkinson.  I'm a sucker for dragon books, and when I was walking the Juvenile fiction isle with my daughter I saw the title and stuck it in my bag.  It was pretty good - about a slave girl who helps a dragon and discovers that she is a dragon keeper.

Lyddie

4 cookies
Lyddie by Katherine Patterson.  A juvenile fiction book about a young girl who ends up working in a Mill to support her far-away family.  A great look into life in 1843.

Moonglass

4 cookies
Moonglass by Jessi Kirby.  A young girl and her father move back to the place where the mother and father met - before the mother walked into the ocean.  How she works to put all the pieces of herself and her relationship with her father back together.

The Well and the Mine

4 cookies
The Well and the Mine by Gin Phillips.  The story of a family in rural Alabama in the 1930's.  I liked this book a lot.

Walk Two Moons

4 cookies
Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech.  A sweet, touching juvenile fiction book.  From the summary: "After her mother leaves home suddenly, thirteen year old Sal and her grandparents take a car trip retracing her mother's route.  Along the way, Sal recounts the story of her friend Phoebe, whose mother also left."  I liked it.

Bonnie

4 cookies
Bonnie by Iris Johansen.  FINALLY, the wrap-up to what happened to Bonnie, and how Eve and Quinn find her.  This was better than the last few that I read in this series, it was better written and faster-moving.  I guess I will wait and see if Ms. Johansen continues on with Eve and Quinn - without the mystery of Bonnie keeping them going.

Clockwork Prince

4 cookies
Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare.  This is the 2nd book in the Infernal Devices series, after Clockwork Angel.  I did really like this book, but I didn't REALLY get into it until about halfway through.  It made me cry at the end, and I can't wait for the last book to come out, because I need to see how all these wounded-heart people are going to heal.  I do wish that I had re-read Clockwork Angel before jumping into this one - I didn't remember enough for some of the story to make sense.

Ever After

4 cookies
Ever After by Karen Kingsbury.  This is the sequel to Even Now.  I admit - this book made me cry.  Over and over and over.  I think I read most of it through blurry eyes.  A beautiful story about love, patriotism, and sacrifice.

Even Now

4 cookies
Even Now by Karen Kingsbury.  Yes, I have been reading a lot of her books lately - but she is very easy to read, usually I really like the stories, and I know that they will be clean.  This one is about a teenage couple who find themselves expecting a baby, and their parents do everything to keep them apart.  Fast forward 18 years, to a girl who was raised by loving grandparents, and is looking everywhere for her parents.  I liked it.

Silver Girl

4 cookies
Silver Girl by Elin Hilderbrand.  This book is about a woman who finds out that her husband created the biggest ponzi scheme ever, and she didn't know anything about it.  He heads off to jail, and she and her son are investigated by the Feds.  She goes into hiding with her former best friend in Nantucket.  Pretty good!

Crossed

2 cookies
Crossed by Ally Condie.  This is a sequel to Matched, which I really liked, but this book did nothing for me.  It took me close to a week to finish it - a VERY long time for me.  I just couldn't get into it.  In it, Cassia finds her way to Ty, but love isn't all it is cut out to be.  Sigh.  Maybe the last book will make it better.

Nothing Daunted

4 cookies
Nothing Daunted by Dorothy Wickenden.  This is a true story about the author's grandmother, and the grandmother's best friend, who were society girls in New York state, and who after college (around 1916) decided to become teachers in Colorado, which was the Wild West at that time.  It is a great peek into the west and how things were.

Sacred

4 cookies
Sacred by Dennis Lehane.  I love, love, love these books, although this was my least favorite of the Kenzie and Gennaro books.  But I still liked it.  They are hired to track down a dying man's daughter, and the more they dig the more things aren't what they seem.

Longing

3 cookies
Longing by Karen Kingsbury.  This is the 3rd book in the Bailey Flanigan series, and I can't say I loved it. The characters are frustrating me - and not going the direction I thought they should.  There is one more book, coming out in March - maybe it will end in a way that I like.  Since it's all about me.

Inheritance

5 cookies
Inheritance by Christopher Paolini.  The last book in the series.  I really liked it, and I felt like he wrapped things up pretty well.  There were some good surprises, and I was satisfied.

Brisingr

4 cookies
Brisingr by Christopher Paolini.  I gave this one only 4 cookies, I feel it is too long winded.  In this one Eragon finally gets his own sword, and learns a lot of things about himself.

Eldest

5 cookies
Eldest by Christopher Paolini.  The second book in the Eragon series.  In this one, a second Rider appears, and the fight is on!

Eragon

5 cookies
Eragon by Christopher Paolini.  I have read Eragon several times before, I really like the series.  I am rereading it now because the last book has come out, and I want the whole story fresh in my mind!  Eragon is about a boy who finds a dragon egg, and it hatches for him.  He then becomes a Dragon Rider, and has to decide how he will use his new-found powers.

The Unwanteds

4 cookies
The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann.  This is a Young Adult fantasy book, but I quite liked it.  It is about a community that when the children are in their 13th year, the leaders decide if a child is a Wanted, a Necessary, or an Unwanted.  The Unwanted are then killed.  Except, someone saves them (unbeknownst to the leaders) and keeps them safe and teaches them magic.  Eventually, the two worlds collide.

Lethal

Lethal by Sandra Brown.  Typical Sandra Brown - strong girl falls for the "bad" guy - then they catch the real bad guys.

Divergent

4 cookies
Divergent by Veronica Roth.  I can't even explain this.  But I liked it!

Heart of Evil

3 cookies
Heart of Evil by Heather Graham.  This was okay, about people who solve crimes by listening to ghosts.

A Drink Before the War

4 cookies
A Drink Before the War by Dennis Lehane.  I LOVE Dennis Lehane, but as I have said before he is very intense and graphic.  This was his debut novel, the first book with Kenzie and Gennaro.  Really, really great books.

Before I Go To Sleep

5 cookies
Before I Go To Sleep by S. J. Watson.  I loved this book - I could not put it down.  I started it right after dinner, and I would not go to sleep until I finished!  So, after stopping to take care of kids and get them to bed, I think I read it in about 4 hours.   It is about a woman who wakes up every morning with no idea where she is or who she is with.  (50 First Dates-ish.)  She thinks of herself as a young woman, but she is actually 47.  Every time she goes into a deep sleep she forgets everything she had learned that day.  She lives with her husband Ben, who cares for her and explains everything every day.  But as she starts to remember more things with the help of a journal, she starts to wonder if everything that Ben tells her is true.

Quinn

3 cookies
Quinn by Iris Johansen.  What is think is the second to last book in the series about Eve and her dead daughter Bonnie - I hope!  I need to know how it all ends, but I am kind of over the series.  The last one is on my waiting list at the library.  What I didn't really get about this book was why it was called Quinn - because Joe Quinn is not really in very much of it.  It is mostly about 2 other characters.  Oh well.

Falling Together

4 cookies
Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos.  A book about 3 best friends whose life together falls apart in the complexities of adult life, and how 2 come together to help the 3rd.  I loved the characters in this book, and the intricacies of their relationships.

Oceans Apart

4 cookies
Oceans Apart by Karen Kingbury.  I've talked about her books before, she is a Christian writer, her books are all about God and living a good life.  This one was different from the other ones I have read, in that the main character had an affair, and in the other book I have read by her that would never happen.  But I liked this book - the man had an affair when his marriage was in trouble, and the woman he was with didn't know he was married.  It resulted in a child, that she never tells the man about.  Until - she is killed in an airplane crash, and her will states that she wants the man to spend time with the boy before he goes into the system.  This certainly creates havoc in his family, his wife and two daughters.  But of course everything works out in the end.

Eyes Wide Open

4 cookies
Eyes Wide Open by Andrew Gross.  A doctor's nephew is found dead, and is assumed to be a suicide.  As he looks closer into the situation, it becomes more dangerous and clear that there is much more going on.

One Summer

4 cookies
One Summer by David Baldacci.  This author usually writes political thrillers, this book is more like a family drama.  A man is terminally ill, and just as he is about to die, his wife is killed in a car crash.  After is kids are split up across the country, he finds himself miraculously getting better.  Reuniting with his kids they start to work on being a family again.

Room

4 cookies
Room by Emma Donoghue.  A kind of creepy story, told by a 5 year old boy that was born in and never left an 11x11 room.  His mother was abducted, and kept in a "improved" storage shed.  "Spoiler Alert!"  When they escape, the whole wide world is a little much for him to understand.

Split Second

4 cookies
Split Second by Catherine Coulter.  This is an FBI Thriller, her series with Savich and Sherlock.  I like these books, but the quality seems to be declining the more books she puts out.  This one is about Ted Bundy's daughter.

Join Me!

4 cookies
Join Me! by Danny Wallace.  I've said it before - I love Danny Wallace.  Reading his books makes me laugh out loud - which isn't something I normally do!  Join Me! is about when Danny decided to create a "collective" in memory of a dead great-uncle, and put ads in the paper to "join me!", and people started to join.  But Danny didn't what they were "joining" him in, and eventually it becomes a sort of "random acts of kindness" kind of thing.  Funny funny.

The Goddess Test

4 cookies
The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter.  I really liked this book.  Hades needs to find a queen, but the 11 girls who have taken the goddess test have all died.  He has one more shot - and Kate is the one he tries with.  She either becomes immortal or dies trying.  A great fresh take on the Greek myths.

The Body Finder

4 cookies
The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting. This is a YA novel, about a girl with the power of being drawn to all things murdered.  Animals, humans, whatever.  When young girls start disappearing in her area, she uses that power to find the killer - but, of course, he figures out she knows.

You're Next

5 cookies
You're Next by Gregg Hurwitz.  Love this guy - he writes the most intense, intricate stories.  You never know where he is going to take it.  He does use graphic imagery and language, so be aware of that.  I don't even know how to explain this one - a guy who was abandoned at age 4 grows up and has a family, who are then threatened because of who he is.  That will have to explain enough.

Heaven is for Real

4 cookies
Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo.  A mans son comes close to death during surgery and visits heaven.  The true story of a little boy's trip to heaven and back.  It certainly gave me stuff to think about, esp. with my own thoughts and feelings about what heaven and Jesus are about.

The Power of Six

5 cookies
The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore.  Love this series - the first was I Am Number Four.  I couldn't put it down and now I have to wait who knows how long for the next book to come out.  Can't wait!  About aliens in a struggle to live, basically.

The Most Dangerous Thing

3 cookies
The Most Dangerous Thing by Laura Lippman.  I quite like this author, but this wasn't my favorite book.  About 5 friends and what changes the dynamics of their relationships.

Love the one you're with

3 cookies
Love the one you're with by Emily Giffin.  This was my least favorite of the books I have read by this author.  A woman is married, and runs into an old boyfriend, and has to decide who she really wants.

Prayers for Rain

4 cookies
Prayers for Rain by Deninis Lehane.  I love love this author, but he is quite graphic and there is a lot of bad language.  Everything I have read by him has just sucked me in.  I think about his books a lot after I read them - to me the sign of a great writer.  Prayers for Rain is part of a series about Private Investigators in Boston.

Too Close to the Falls

4 cookies
Too Close to the Falls by Catherine Gildiner.  A fabulous memoir of a young girl growing up near Niagara Falls.  A four she started working in her father's pharmacy - a great story of a precocious little girl.

Yes Man

4 cookies
Yes Man by Danny Wallace.  I LOVE Danny Wallace - I laugh so hard when I read his books!  The other one I read was Friends Like These, I seriously cried while reading it.  They are memoirs, really, about experiments in his life.  He is English, and I love that.  Funny, funny funny!

Cause Celeb

4 cookies
Cause Celeb by Helen Fielding.  I quite liked this book - about a woman who after a breakup with a guy who messed with her head ends up running a refugee camp in Africa.  When a crisis comes she has to go back to London and get help from the guy and his crazy celebrity friends.

Bridget Jones's Diary - The Edge of Reason

3 cookies
Bridget Jones's Diary - The Edge of Reason by Helen Fielding.  I think I forgot to list Bridget Jones's Diary in my mass list below.  I had read it before, and I could have sworn that I read The Edge of Reason before as well - but I honestly didn't remember a thing about it!  So maybe I didn't.  It was OK - more crazy Bridget that I want to strangle because she makes things so difficult.

Learning

4 cookies
Learning by Karen Kingsbury.  This is a Christian author, and her books are full of God and prayer and living a clean life.  Learning is the second book in a series - the first is Leaving.  The series is about a girl who leaves her family to follow her dream on Broadway and the boy who she loves - they are broken up, he becomes a high school football coach.  Pretty good.

Outlander

5 cookies
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.  I really liked this book, but I struggled with how many cookies it would get.  It does have some disturbing and graphic scenes, and because of that I didn't want to give it my highest of 5 cookies.  But, I couldn't stop thinking about the characters and the storyline, and usually those are the reasons I give a book 5 cookies.  This book is about a woman who is transported back in time 200 years in Scotland, and is forced into marriage.  (She is already married!)  Her husband is wanted for a crime he didn't commit, and is eventually caught.  I won't say more.  There are 7 more books in the series, and I can't NOT read them - but I am nervous to.  I know that there is more time travel in the next books, and I don't want the characters to have to be apart!  I'd rather they could just be happy - but I have to know what happens!

Angel Falls

4 cookies
Angel Falls by Kristen Hannah. Pretty good, a woman hits her head and goes into a coma, and wakes with missing memory - interesting.

Firefly Lane

4 cookies
Firefly Lane by Kristen Hannah. After reading Winter Garden and loving it, I'm reading some of Kristen Hannah's earlier books. I'm not quite as impressed with them as I was Winter Garden, but they are still good. Some bad language. This book was good and sad - a thirty year chronicle of two women's friendship.

Moonlight Mile

4 cookies
Moonlight Mile by Dennis Lehane. I'm always slightly disturbed by Dennis Lehane's books, but I always think about them for a long time, and I'm always sucked right into the stories. This is the sequel to Gone Baby Gone, and I didn't like it quite as well, but I liked seeing what happened to the characters from the first book. Be warned of graphic details and language.

The Graveyard Book

5 cookies
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Loved this book, about a boy raised in a graveyard by ghosts, and a guardian who seems to be a vampire. Very sweet, despite the morbidness of the setting.

The Murder of King Tut: the plot to kill the child king: a non-fiction thriller by James Patterson and Martin Dugard. Loved this book, I was totally fascinated with it. They pieced together what they think happened to King Tut, and then actual finding of his tomb. So interesting.

Babyville

Babyville by Jane Green. Very much like the other Jane Green novels, which is to say, it was okay.

The Lion

The Lion by Nelson DeMille. Great book with one of my all time favorite characters.

Whiplash

Whiplash by Catherine Coulter. One of the FBI thriller books. I really liked this series when it first came out, but the quality has gone steadily downhill. I still like the characters.

Taken

By Kathleen George. It seems like I liked this one.

I'm Back

Hopefully I can start keeping this up again - having a baby (esp. #5!) can certainly take up all your time. We will see what I can remember from them last couple of months.
